The Private Sector’s Role in Advancing Women in STEM

The Private Sector’s Role in Advancing Women in STEM w/ POY Fellow Eduarda Zoghbi in partnership with United Airlines at the Brazilian-American Chamber of Commerce

The transition to a sustainable energy future is critical in achieving decarbonization goals, which requires making energy systems more resilient to climate change and adopting clean energy technologies. This transition must be just and inclusive, ensuring all segments of society benefit from emerging opportunities and green jobs. Women remain significantly underrepresented in the energy sector, comprising only about 22% of the oil and gas industry and 32% of renewable energy (IRENA, 2019). One of the main reasons for this lack of representation is the low participation of women in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields.

The role of the private sector is crucial in addressing these disparities and fostering a more inclusive energy transition to drive sustainable economic growth. Companies can leverage their resources and innovative capabilities to support and empower women in STEM through scholarships, mentorship programs, targeted recruitment efforts, and workplace policies that promote diversity and inclusion. Collaboration between the private sector, governments, and educational institutions is essential in creating supportive ecosystems that encourage women to pursue STEM careers.

In parallel with New York Climate Week and Columbia University’s Brazil Climate Summit, the Brazilian-American Chamber of Commerce hosted a luncheon showcasing how private sector companies have been supporting more women to access STEM education, trainings, and mentorship opportunities. Panelists shared programs that contribute to greater female participation in STEM fields, particularly in the energy sector, and will explore private sector strategies and practices to better support women and contribute to a sustainable and inclusive energy futur
