We had a panel of experts on the practical aspects of compliance in the COVID and post-COVID world. Our panelists — João Elek, former Chief Compliance Officer of Petrobras; Patricia Godoy Oliveira, Director Ethics & Compliance of Uber Brasil; Thiago Pinheiro of Mattos Filho Advogados; and Philip Urofsky of Shearman & Sterling — drew upon their experience in Brazil and the United States to discuss:

• Issues in developing and implementing a sustainable compliance program, including ensuring management and business buy-in;

• Developing tools for monitoring and measuring the effectiveness of the compliance program;

• Addressing allegations, including conducting internal investigations, interacting with the government, and dealing with interested third parties, such as auditors and banks; and

• Handling “remote” compliance and managing the “return to normalcy.”
